What is InYPT?
The IYPT is a team-based physics competition in which students research seventeen open-ended problems over a year and defend their findings in a structured debate called a Physics Fight. InYPT is the national selection process that determines the Indian delegation.
Since India's first participation in the IYPT in 2018, we have progressed significantly, earning our first honorable mention in 2025 and our highest ever rank in 2026. Every year, more and more talented physics students take part in the InYPT.
Bombay Scottish School is the International Member Organisation (IMO) for India, and Mr. Shashikant Pandey serves as the International Organising Committee (IOC) representative.

What students gain from the IYPT
Unlike textbook learning, the IYPT rewards hands-on investigation and original thinking over memorisation. Taking part builds skills that go beyond physics:
- Teamwork. Investigating the seventeen problems in any depth takes real teamwork. Students learn to organise their own work and cooperate as a group, one of the most valued skills in today's workplace.
- Research. The problems are set out very openly, with no fixed method or single answer. Students learn to research properly and explore ideas without a set of directions to follow.
- Physics knowledge. Working through the problems teaches a lot of physics. Because the work is practical and project-based, it tends to stick for longer than usual classwork, along with a sense of how to apply it.
- Presentation and debate. Each participant has just twelve minutes to present their work clearly and convincingly, and has to respond quickly and thoughtfully to others.
- International engagement. For most students the final means travelling to a new country and meeting like-minded students from around the world.
