Eligibility
InYPT is open to secondary school students who are either citizens of India or enrolled at a school in India. Students in the year of their school graduation are still eligible to take part.
At the international tournament, a national team is made up of three to five students. The selection process is designed to find and prepare the strongest possible group to represent India.
Format
The IYPT is structured as a series of the now-famous “Physics Fights”. A Physics Fight is a structured scientific debate in which teams take turns in three roles.
- Reporter. Presents their team's solution to a problem and draws out the key physics.
- Opponent. Questions the report, points out its weaknesses, and discusses it with the Reporter.
- Reviewer. Assesses how well both the Reporter and the Opponent performed.
Teams rotate through these roles over the course of a fight, and a jury scores each performance. For the full rules, see the official IYPT regulations at iypt.org →
At the InYPT, a Physics Fight is made up of a report and an opposition. The Reporter presents their work on one of the 17 problems, and the Opponent evaluates and challenges the report before both sides engage in a scientific discussion. Unlike the IYPT, the InYPT does not use the Reviewer role. The steps of a match at the InYPT are as follows:
